John Maxwell was true when he said that the essence of leadership is influence. The problem is that in order to be influential, a leader must have certain qualities that support and enable him to function as an effective leader. This is the importance of the model of a leader with certain qualities that prove to be effective at all times. Jesus is a leader model that very effective. This is the start point of this book. This book comprises six chapters. Chapter I: in this chapter the author speaks of the development and the shift of one’s view on the leadership concept. Next, he overviews briefly on how a man can become a leader. Finally, he argues that a leader’s reliability is not only determined by his moral and intellectual integrity, but he is also equipped with religious integrity. This chapter clarifies the religious integrity based on the leadership concept of the Great Leader, Jesus Christ. Chapter II: Discussing one of the main tasks of a leader, that is of a unifier. A leader must be able to unify his followers. In the context of the main task, this chapter deals briefly with the importance of a vision for a leader. Regarding this vision, a leader is required to have self-integrity and inner being purity as well as an ability to convey the vision through an effective communication. Then, the author deals with the relationship between the unity commitment and the Understanding and Acceptance concept, between assignment specification and effective communication; he also speaks of unity in diversity, group harmony, and going hand-in-hand statement. In conclusion, the author closes chapter II with the necessity of a friend and information selectivity for a leader. Chapter III especially comments on the significance of Christian leadership. It is explained that Christian leadership is based on special emphasis on human equality (universal significance). Starting from that spirit, a Christian leader inevitably bears a responsibility for empowering human resources that is trusted to him (empowerment significance). Besides, a Christian leader is also required to always do self-introspection (self-introspection significance). The end of this chapter presents issues such as the obligations of Christian leadership (personal responsibility, networking responsibility, internal responsibility, responsibility to stakeholders, and responsibility to God). Chapter IV: This chapter discusses four main issues on leadership management: organizing and delegating, motivation and delegation communication, control of activities, and conflict resolution. Chapter V: The relationship between leader and change is discussed here. This chapter begins with understanding that an organization in itself contains a change. Without any external influence, in essence an organization is in a dynamic condition and it always encounters phases of change. In addition, the author also talks about the relationship between change and organization’s vision. In this matter, an executive plays a role to function as a leader and manager. In the next part, the author talks about the relationship between change, togetherness, and trust. He also discusses leader as a “friend” in the process of a change. He closes this chapter with the discussion on the benefit and downfall of change and a leader’s initiative dealing with change, where he is required to be able to determine when he must begin a planned change with all its consequences. Chapter VI contains practical guides. In this chapter the author presents practical guides in order that leaders can be angry and rebuke constructively a fellow member of the organization, whether he is a fellow Christian or not, and deal with pressure and stress. |
